Journey Behind the Coffee

About the Producer/Farm

This coffee comes from Corazón de Jesús, a micro-mill operated by the Alvarado Fonseca family in the Brunca region of Costa Rica. Led by Jhon Alvarado Abarca—affectionately known as "Johny"—the family’s dedication to quality and innovation has earned them repeated recognition at the prestigious Cup of Excellence competitions, including a 2nd place finish in the 2024 Honeys and Naturals category.

Jhon and his brother Antonio manage four coffee farms totaling 16 hectares of cultivation, supported by their siblings who also farm nearby. Their energy, vision, and relentless pursuit of excellence have made them a standout name in Costa Rican specialty coffee. Notably, Finca La Torre, one of their farms, was among the first in the region to plant the celebrated Gesha variety, reflecting their pioneering spirit and commitment to continuous improvement.

Region / Terroir

Located between 1800 and 1950 meters above sea level in the mountainous Brunca region, the Alvarado family's farms benefit from ideal growing conditions—high altitude, cool temperatures, and rich volcanic soil.

Their coffee cultivation spans an impressive range of varieties including Villa Sarchi, Gesha, Caturra, SL28, Typica, Panameño, and Ethiopia 47, and is processed with meticulous care using aerobic and anaerobic natural, honey, and washed methods.

This combination of diverse genetics, careful processing, and exceptional terroir results in coffees that are vibrant, complex, and highly celebrated on the world stage—showcasing the incredible potential of Costa Rica’s southern highlands.
