Journey Behind the Coffee
About the Producer/Farm
This coffee comes from Kunjin, a collection of coffees sourced from smallholder producers throughout the Wahgi Valley in Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands. Coffee farming in Papua New Guinea is largely family-based, with producers tending small plots alongside food crops that support their households and local communities.
Ripe cherries are delivered to local processing facilities, where they are carefully sorted and processed using the washed method. Through this collaborative system, coffees from many individual farmers are brought together while maintaining the quality standards that have made Papua New Guinea an increasingly respected origin in specialty coffee.
The varieties grown in this region are diverse, often including traditional cultivars such as Typica, Bourbon, Arusha, and Blue Mountain descendants, which have adapted well to the region’s mountainous environment. The result is a coffee that reflects both the diversity of its producers and the unique character of the Wahgi Valley.
Region / Terroir
Nestled within the Wahgi Valley of Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands, this coffee is grown in a landscape defined by rugged mountains, fertile volcanic soils, and abundant rainfall. Elevations throughout the region create ideal conditions for slow cherry development, allowing sweetness and complexity to build over time.
Papua New Guinea occupies a unique place in the coffee world, combining the bright acidity often associated with East African coffees with the deeper sweetness and body found in Pacific origins. The region’s relative isolation and traditional farming practices contribute to coffees that are distinctive, expressive, and deeply connected to their environment.
In the cup, this lot offers notes of almond, yellow plum, and molasses, supported by a gentle acidity and candy-like sweetness. The result is a balanced and approachable coffee that showcases the character of the Wahgi Valley and the collective efforts of the farming communities behind it.
