Journey Behind the Coffee

About the Producer/Farm

The Gao Family Coffee Estate, located in Shangxia Laogao Village, Menglian County, Yunnan, sits between 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level. With over 82 acres under direct cultivation and partnerships supporting an additional 165+ acres, the estate plays a key role in the local specialty coffee movement—supplying respected brands like Seesaw, M2M, and Manner.

As one of the first farms in the region to adopt modern agricultural practices, the Gao estate uses soil analysis, organic fertilization, and drone-assisted pest control, while also nurturing small-scale experimental varietals. Their commitment to sustainability and precision shows in every step—from shade-grown methods to targeted field management.

This lot is processed using the Anaerobic Natural (Double Fermentation) method, combining anaerobic fermentation in whole cherries with a secondary aerobic stage after mucilage removal. This careful process enhances sweetness and body while unlocking vibrant tropical fruit character.

Region / Terroir

Menglian County, located in the lush borderlands of Yunnan Province, has quickly become one of China’s most promising specialty coffee regions. With elevations reaching 1,600 MASL, a cool subtropical climate, and fertile, well-drained soil, the area is ideal for slow cherry development—encouraging higher sugar content and refined acidity.

The unique microclimate, paired with careful cultivation and processing innovations from pioneering estates like the Gao family, is producing coffees with increasing clarity, sweetness, and regional distinction. The Gao’s commitment to terroir-driven expression is helping shape a new chapter in Yunnan’s coffee identity.
